Hooters Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas

Hooters, the establishment that has achieved its fame through its chicks and chicken wings, can be described as a showgirl restaurant with a neighborhood atmosphere. The owners pride themselves in being more casual and comfortable than your average nightclub. Hooters Restaurants are characterized by their beach-themes. Music from the 50s and 60s plays on the juke box, while the television above the bar shows the latest sports events. Hooters Restaurant prides itself on being “family friendly,” and even offers a children’s menu.

The world-famous Hooters Girls distinguish the restaurant from other sports bars. They are sexy but wholesome, and their appeal is similar to that of a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader, a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model or a Radio City Rockette. Unlike the typical showgirl of other Las Vegas attractions, a Hooter Girl generally has an approachable, girl-next-door quality.

The slot machines at the Hooters Casino Hotel will feature all the popular favorites, including Megabucks(TM), Wheel of Fortune(TM) and Monopoly(TM). Additionally, there will be a number of games that can be found exclusively at Hooters, such as Blazing Hooters, Golf-Shot Slots, and an all-coin Heavy Metal slots. The Loot-a-Palooza will be the Hooters Casino Hotel’s version of a high-limit slot area, complete with great games and Hooters Girl hostesses to serve up the fun!

Monte Carlo Fire in Las Vegas Forces Guests to Flee

Monte Carlo Fire in Las Vegas Forces Guests to Flee (Update4)

By Ryan Flinn

Jan. 25 (Bloomberg) -- A fire billowing black smoke broke out at the top of MGM Mirage's 32-story Monte Carlo Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip today, forcing the evacuation of its 3,002 rooms and gaming hall. No injuries were reported.

``Our firefighters had to hang out of the windows'' to put out the blaze, Steven Smith, Clark County fire chief, said in a televised interview. The cause of the fire, which was mostly confined to the exterior of the building, is under investigation. There was no immediate indication of arson, he said.

The fire raised memories of the 1980 blaze at the MGM Grand Hotel, which killed 87 people and led to new safety measures for hotels in the U.S.

Today's fire affected the roof of the Monte Carlo and at least two floors below, Gordon Absher, a spokesman for MGM, said in an interview. He said he didn't know how many people were staying at the hotel today. The Monte Carlo has 3,015 employees, and the casino has more than 102,100 square feet of gaming space, according to its Web site.

MGM, the world's second-largest casino company, fell $2.25, or 3.1 percent, to $70.80 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading today. The shares were down prior to the first reports of the fire. The company's shares climbed 47 percent last year.

Built by Mandalay

The Monte Carlo, which sits on the Las Vegas Strip adjacent to MGM's $7.8 billion CityCenter project, opened in 1996 and was renovated in 2004. It was built by Mandalay Resort Group, which MGM bought in 2005.

It is one of more than two dozen casinos on the strip, and is the 13th largest by casino floor space and 11th by rooms. The casino won $160 million from gamblers in 2006, according to Jefferies & Co. estimates, the seventh-highest amount among Las Vegas Strip casinos.

The top floor features personalized concierge service for guests who stay in one of 45 deluxe rooms, seven suites or eight one- or two-bedroom penthouses, according to the hotel's Web site.

The Nevada Public Safety Department shut down some exit ramps from Interstate 15 in Las Vegas and some nearby roads as traffic began to back up while motorists slowed to look at the fire, department spokesman Kevin Honea said in a telephone interview.

``I can't tell you exactly how far it's backed up,'' Honea said. ``I-15 traffic is still flowing. It looks like it normally does at 4 p.m., and it's noon.''

The MGM Grand blaze on Nov. 21, 1980, flashed through the casino at a rate of 19 feet per second, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. An investigation determined that a sprinkler system could have averted the disaster; legal settlements totaled more than $223 million, the newspaper said. The hotel is now Bally's.

A's Deal OF Nick Swisher to White Sox

The Oakland Athletics made their second major trade in three weeks, sending outfielder and fan favorite Nick Swisher to the Chicago White Sox for three minor leaguers on Thursday.

The A's - who dealt ace Dan Haren to Arizona on Dec. 14 - received left-hander Gio Gonzalez, right-hander Fautino De Los Santos and outfielder Ryan Sweeney.

Oakland general manager Billy Beane acknowledged last month that the A's are rebuilding and said he expects the club to take its lumps next season after the team missed the playoffs in 2007. The A's reached the AL championship series in 2006, but Oakland (76-86) had its streak of winning seasons end at eight and went 9-17 in September.

The 27-year-old Swisher, a switch-hitter and a popular presence in the clubhouse because of his high-energy, playful nature, had been one of few constants for Oakland in recent seasons - playing in the outfield and at first base while the team dealt with injuries at most every position. Also active in community service, he was Oakland's 16th selection in the first round of the 2002 draft. He will now live much closer to his offseason home in Parkersburg, W. Va.

He batted .262 with 22 homers and 78 RBIs in 150 games in 2007, his third full big league season. He also drew 100 walks, ranking him sixth in the AL, for a career-best .381 on-base percentage.

His 80 home runs were a franchise record by a switch-hitter, and Swisher also set his highs for batting average, walks and doubles (36).

The A's will have three more established minor leaguers to add to their farm system.

Gonzalez, 22, pitched for Double-A Birmingham last year and led minor league baseball with 185 strikeouts. He went 9-7 with a 3.18 ERA in 27 starts and was selected to the Southern League midseason and postseason All-Star teams. The White Sox acquired Gonzalez as a compensation pick - the 38th selection overall of the 2004 amateur draft.

The 21-year-old De Los Santos went 9-4 with a 2.40 ERA in 15 starts and six relief appearances for Class A Kannapolis in 2007. He was picked as the South Atlantic League's top prospect and was also a midseason and postseason All-Star.

In addition, he made five starts for Class-A Winston-Salem and had a combined record of 10-5 record with a 2.65 ERA.

Sweeney, a 22-year-old left hitter, was among Chicago's top prospects going into last season, when he batted .270 with 10 home runs and 47 RBIs in 105 games for Triple-A Charlotte. He also hit .200 with a home run and five RBIs in 15 games for the White Sox.
